Services

Pathologic Interpretation

TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL

Our primary service is the processing and professional interpretation of surgical specimens, including biopsies and excisions from any site of the body. Spek Diagnostics maintains specific subspecialty expertise in the interpretation of skin specimens (dermatopathology), with additional special training in ophthalmic pathology and oral pathology. In these cases, a specimen is sent to our laboratory, we perform the gross examination and the technical component of slide preparation, and, finally, the slide is interpreted by our board-certified pathologist. A pathology report is crafted and sent back to the provider.

Slide Preparation

TECHNICAL

We offer glass or digital slide preparation services for providers who prefer to interpret their own slides. In these cases, a specimen is sent to our laboratory and our technicians perform the gross evaluation and technical component of the slide preparation. We then either ship the glass slide back to the provider or digitize the slide for remote viewing and interpretation. If, in the course of reviewing a digital image, the glass slide becomes necessary, periodic slide shipping protocols may be arranged on a per client basis.

Second Opinion

A patient may request a second opinion on the interpretation of a specimen. In these special cases, the slides are typically sent to our office with a copy of the original clinical information and/or any prior interpretation or report. Our board-certified pathologist will evaluate the entire case and render an expert opinion on the case, potentially ordering any necessary ancillary testing to augment the existing data to arrive at an integrated diagnosis. A pathology report is crafted and returned to the patient.

Expert Consultation

A provider may submit a slide for a primary read or may request a consultation to assist with the interpretation of a slide. In these cases, the slides are typically sent to our office with a copy of the original clinical information. Our board-certified pathologist will interpret the slides, ordering any additional testing deemed necessary. A pathology report is crafted and returned to the provider.

Quality Control Slide Review

For Mohs Surgeons or dermatologists who process and interpret their own slides, we provide professional review of slide quality and diagnostic accuracy. Our board-certified dermatopathologist will evaluate the case and provide a tabulation of the cases and slides submitted, with scores for slide quality and diagnostic accuracy. If no diagnosis is provided for comparison, our pathologist will render a diagnosis and the submitting office will be responsible for performing the correlation for diagnostic accuracy.
